Armchair experts man. The internet is full of them. Same reason why all modern art totally eludes them. They don’t understand that there is more to art than making something photorealistic.

You have to expect criticism along with praise. The solution is simple- if you don’t to subject your art to criticism, don’t post it.

If you don’t like comments on art in Oppositelock fine. Comments are subjective and you can totally flag them or dismiss them or tell the commenter you were offended.

But don’t create a new shit-stirring post calling out another Opponaut just because they did what everyone does to art - critique it.

1) Push this post to your drafts

2) Remove the link and reference to said commenter.

why does everyone with no training whatsoever think that they know art? just because they think it has to do with seeing they think eveyone is an expert at seeing and judging. people dont think they can just pick up a guitar and be in a band people dont think they can step in front of a mic and belt it out like henry connick jr so why do people think because they have two eyes they know good art vs bad art and that its all so simple?

Stupid people look at a work of art and say they dont like it because they think they know why but can never express it when asked. Smart people look at art and can tell you why they like it and how it was done.

In my opinion and this is hard for me to even admit to myself but the lowest form or artistic expression is the expression of skill in representing something that already exists in perfect replication. Its also the easiest for morons to step in front of it and say this sucks because I know what a porsche 911 looks like and this drawing doesnt look exactly like a 911.

I disagree with the “art is subjective” thing. Here’s what I wrote about it once :

“Art is a function of Technical Skill multiplied by the Average Audience Reaction and divided by the original Intent. A modifying Environmental Constant may be added on, representing how current events affect the outcome. A positive Environmental Constant means that there is a more favourable reaction as the work resonates with the times, where a negative Environmental Constant represents dissonance with contemporary values.

Short form:A = SR/I + E”

Also, what was the assignment?

Kinja'd!!!1

Honest question: have you been in art school at all?

I have. I’m not saying Denver is in this category, but there are a plethora of completely unskilled individuals in art, at least at the lower levels. Many works that are considered modern art are executed by people who can render the real, because you have to know what the rules of reality are before you can break or otherwise use them. That is the difference between a 10-year old and her doodles and Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica.”

There are a great many people in art school who don’t understand the rules and don’t ever seem to understand them no matter how hard you try to teach them. They may occasionally make something cool-looking, but they won’t get hired ever because being able to render things realistically is generally a requirement in a job. This is true for Disney, Valve, Studio Ghibli, General Motors, you name it. Unless you want to go into graphic design, but then you don’t need a traditional art background for that.

Finally, these same people also tend to scoff at realistic rendering (even one of my professors did), as if it’s unnecessary because you can just take pictures. That is a fundamentally flawed concept, because you can’t take a picture of something that doesn’t exist yet but needs to be rendered believably.

The reason I did that is because I felt that the mods havent done anything. You posted a picture that looked like it was drawn by a five year old in MS Paint, so I commented as much. Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but I didn't say it with malice.

In an effort to keep things civil, I’ll move this over to the cigar lounge. But you have to understand that If I felt that the guidelines for dealing with things like this as described in the handbook was adequate and working, I would not have made this post. I am just at my wits end with this user and he hasnt had anything nice to say to me for quite some time. I dont know what type of control the mods have over this, but he is in a facebook chat that a few other Oppo users are in. I used to be in it, they only added me to antagonize me in a forum they saw to have no consequences regarding their oppoship. But if you saw what was said in that chat, you would see that the antagonization has crossed over to oppo. Isnt ther a rule as well “dont say anything bad that can lead back to oppo”?

I have no requirement to understand why you chose to do the very same thing the other user did and ignore the handbook. The policies and procedures we have put in place will obviously not work if you don’t use them . I do not have any authority over the FB group, and as I understand it is associated with Oppositelock in name-only. I do not know what posting rules or guidelines they have (505turbeaux should have some insight).

We do have a rule that says you should not stir shit here or elsewhere that will lead back to Oppositelock, but that is more along the confines of the Gawkerverse. If someone is being an ass on Facebook we have no ability to penalize them, but at the same time each incident can be reviewed by us if we’re given the information.

AHA! I had to move this back to oppo and schedule it for the future to see the comments. I will move it back once we are done discussing this. Stupid kinja. In the chat they would egg each other on to see who could make the most insulting comment to any oppo user they didnt like (not just me), and then you would see a comment on oppo immediately after in a post of that user that was antagonistic but just barely within the rules. If you had access to that chat, you would see a very obvious pattern of deliberate trolling and bullying.

Thank you for the insight into your spectrum of power so to speak, If I send screenshots to the moderator email (I was removed from the chat but i have the old comments saved on my phone) would you be able to do anything if it is as blatant as I have said?

04/20/2015 at 14:33

Kinja'd!!!1

whoa man, this reply may be a bit misplaced. All I meant was that there are a lot of people who scoff at things they don’t get. Also, no, I haven’t been to art school. Just some art/ art history classes in high school. I’m an engineer, but I like to think I have a decent appreciation of art for a person not directly involved in the art game. I didn’t say there was anything wrong with photorealism, just that a lot of people don’t understand that there are more than one type of art, and more than just what they like, and it is O.K.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Mattbob
04/20/2015 at 14:46

Kinja'd!!!0

I’m an engineer as well. Systems. I stopped my formal art education when I realized that I wasn’t learning anything I couldn’t teach myself with time and dedication to the craft, and because the people around me were mostly incapable of being objective with their craft. It was always “well, this is still good at XYZ because reasons” even when the work flat-out failed to render the assignment in an acceptable fashion. It’s like, why bother trying?

I also didn’t like how it felt like my math skills were atrophying. And they definitely were.

So I get the multiple angles for what makes art, but disagree with the usage of the word. Art is something a bit more objective than simply different styles of rendering an idea. It’s not solely up to the author as to what makes something art. Without the rest of us involved in the system, it’s just a rendering. That’s it.

So I guess that’s what irked me: the last sentence in your original post. Even if others are not formally educated at all, their reactions are still valid toward defining the work in question as art.

Kinja'd!!! Mattbob > Axial
04/20/2015 at 14:58

I don’t judge assignments out of context, and you did say it was assignment in the original post without saying what that assignment was.

As for creating within this box, embrace it. Knowing how to create within a variety of boxes is essential. What are you studying industrial design to do?

I really want to get into product design, hopefully automotive design. But i got into applied arts because I knew I could never expect to make a living off my artwork. Here’s some examples of my stuff:

Btw that corvette drawing is another one that jayhawk said could have been done by a child. Its done in ballpoint pen.

Expecting to not succeed at something you do is how you fail. There’s no such thing as talent. There’s aptitude for learning, but that’s it. Some people learned the skills they need to be good illustrators or musicians or whatever through other events and activities in their lives without even knowing it, and it manifests as “talent” when they start working their craft. But you always have the ability to learn. It’s not easy. It won’t be easy. It’s a lot of drawing and fucking up and trying again, an iterative process. You see those cars I call “C8” on my dA page? They are all terrible. Every single one. But you can also see the progression from the really, ultra crappy attempts (under “Scraps”...you’ll also find a couple mugshots of myself :p) to the ones in the main galleries. I’m still working on making that car pretty, and I think I’m finally getting somewhere with it, it’s just a slow process because of school and emotional issues.

As for what Jayhawk says; it sucks that he was less than tactful or helpful in his critique, but don’t let it get to you. Professionals are going to be a lot harsher than some ignorant remark on the internet when you go to them for critiques or tips. If I’m totally honest, that Corvette is of the quality of things I could have drawn in middle school (though I never drew cars...I always drew space ships and tanks and things from Halo). But I also practiced my ass off to be able to do that, so that’s not an insult at all. Any child that can draw that practiced his or her ass off, so that’s how you should look at it: as the result of time spent trying.

TL;DR: Don’t mentally cap yourself, use peoples’ negative attitudes to drive you harder, get that job, and stay classy.

TBH I wasnt really trying with the vette drawing. I was just trying to kill half an hour and it ended up turning out better than I intended. I am currently working on something in chalk pastel in my free time. But school and my truck seem to be taking up most of my time lately and I have had to put it on the back burner. Here’s a bit of it as it is in its current, unfinished state:

Kinja'd!!!

I currently have about 10 hours into it.

PS- do you have a link to your deviant art page? I’d love to take a look at some of your work

Just looking at that image, you are already better than I am. I don’t get to flex my skills often, so they kinda just plateau for a bit. I’m a lot stronger in drawing people than I am in cars at the moment.

I linked my dA to you in another thread for this current article when I made my statement about art , but here is the front page . I wasn’t really trying to troll for views, but if you want to take a peek at my eclectic doodles, have at it.

Thanks for the compliment and I’ll definetely take a look at your stuff. But just as proof that Jayhawk is out to get me; he said that that unfinished drawing of mine could have been done by an elementary schooler and wasnt worth the paper its drawn on. This isnt about his opinion of art, he truly doesn’t like me and is going out of his way to show that just short of something banworthy

It’s the internet, man. Some people are just like that. If they want to be that way over the tubes to somebody they don’t even know, just tell them “internet iz srs bznss” and laugh at them.

That said, I only see the one post he made about the berries. It’s a bit out of taste, but not something I wouldn’t just roll my eyes at and move on. You know why you drew it that way, what else matters? I wouldn’t even take complements on that picture seriously, because I would know it was just a homework quickie or whatever. Even if he’s singling you out, and I don’t really know that he is, it’s still just the internet.

The only opinion you should really take seriously is phenotyp’s, since this shit is what he does for a living and he’s very good at it.

Your art post and some of the criticism reminded me of this ‘trolling a dating site’ thread:

I think the drawings were intentionally awful... given the thread is ‘How to troll a dating website’.
